🇮🇶 BIL WEEKEND: 🤍 | 🤍 🧳 TASOS: 🤍 🌎 VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG: 🤍 With another morning in beautiful Iraq ahead of me, I set out to have a tasty Iraqi breakfast before exploring the largest cemetery in the world! My guides Jafar and Ali from Bil Weekend, my friend Tasos, and I started at a restaurant in Najaf that sells beef and lamb kebabs. Some of the kebabs are a mix of the two meats! 📝SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER: 🤍 🌳 MY LINKTREE: 🤍 We watched them grind and form the kebabs, and grill them. Then, we watched them bake some khubz bread in the tanoor oven. It all looked so good! The kebabs came with some charred onions, tomatoes, and a wedge of lemon. Jafar showed me how to make a sandwich with all of the ingredients, with some sumac sprinkled on top. The sumac was a vibrant purple color. Everything combined was so flavorful and smoky. I loved the fresh burst of juiciness from the tomato! I also loved the chicken shorba, which is a thick chicken soup. We also had hummus and an assortment of vegetable dishes, including some purple cabbage and baytinijan. I loved the hummus with the kebab! But we still had more breakfast spots to hit up! At our next spot, we’d have some ash and hareesa. Ash is a thick stew made from grains, monk peas, cow peas, and beef. Hareesa is made from wheat and beef, and they add cinnamon to it! The ash is a dark, rich brown color, while the hareesa is pale in color, similar to hummus. They both cook for about 12 hours. They serve both in containers and finish them by topping them with a ladle full of scalding hot oil! The ash was so thick and earthy, and quite rich. I loved the shredded beef, bans, and crispy onions in it. It was phenomenal. It’s the type of dish that will fill you up and give you energy in the morning! It was very thick and tasty! The hareesa was also thick, but had a hint of sweetness from the cinnamon in it. They can actually make it sweeter by adding sugar to it. We added some and mixed it. It made it very sweet! I loved how sweet, thick, and filling it was, but between it and the ash, I was too full! Plus, the guys there were so kind. Their shop wasn’t too busy because most of the people in the city were along the pilgrimage route to get free food. Outside, we met some men making Arabic coffee for free. It was really nice and creamy! It was almost like an espresso shot. I definitely needed it to wake up! He was selling it for free because of the pilgrimage happening in Iraq at the moment. Next, we drove to the Valley of Peace, which is the biggest cemetery in the world. I’d never seen so many tombs in my life, but it looked like it must have been thousands, maybe even more! We pulled into a parking garage over the cemetery, where we got a nice view over the cemetery. Then, we drove deeper inside. I could see graves of different heights and sizes, as well as empty plots reserved for families. Some graves had flowers or Korans places atop them. It’s a sad place, but also quite beautiful! It was a nice way to end our morning in Najaf. Where have you been? The current crisis in Iraq explained in under 5 minutes. There is war in Iraq? Again? And the US and Iran are talking about working together? And who is this ISIS Terrorist group that is all over the news? And Religion? Oh dear... When exactly has the world gone mad again? It is not possible to explain a complicated topic like this without simplification. We are very aware that this video is not painting a full picture of the situation. But we hope that it may lay the foundation on which you can try to do your own research and understand how horribly Fued up the whole situation is. We did have to produce the video super fast thanks a lot to our friends Martin Wackerbauer and Magnus Schlüter for helping us out we would not have been able to make this video in time without you guys! People, today, I'll show you how people live in the country where during last 50 years wars followed one another. How does it feel like when you look out of your window and see bullet holes everywhere? Can you get used to mined cars and suicide bombers? To your kids playing football next to destroyed ISIS base? Meanwhile, people in Iraq are incredibly friendly. When they find out you're a foreigner and speak Russian, the capital dwellers will certainly offer to pay for your cafe bill. And in small distant towns, they'll greet you as dearest guests. Meet the local star, Iraqi Rambo. He's the most famous fighter against terrorists. Now, it's peaceful in big cities, and tourists enjoy visiting them as some districts are as pleasurable as Dubai, for instance. The malls are not any worse than ours. Many women don't wear hijabs. The atmosphere is secular. But some areas are totally forbidden for tourists and foreigners. Because they are still looking for cutthroats hiding in the mountains. But they'll make an exception for us. Right now we're heading to the front line. To the dividing line where the terrorists' checkpoints used to be. This is Lyadov, and today, I'm in Iraq! This is Lyadov, and today I’m in Mosul, once the capital of the self-proclaimed caliphate of the Islamic State. For a long time, almost every building here looked pretty much like this, but now it’s coming back to life. But seeing all these buildings, many of them high-rises 11, 12 stories tall that have been practically reduced to rubble, is mind bending. This is something that seems entirely impossible both in terms of common sense and in terms of the laws of physics, laws of nature. Yet, right now, despite all the attempts by the terrorists to keep the city as their stronghold, the people of Mosul are getting their peaceful life back. This is Lyadov to tell you how people live in Mosul. In Iraq, climate change has transformed the once mythical mesopotamian marshes into deserts. It's not only temperatures that exceed 125°F and record low rainfall, but dams built by Turkey, Iran, and Syria on the Tigris and Euphrates river have stopped the flow of water before it can pass the border. Thousands have already been displaced in a drought that threatens the entire country. Along the way, there were thousands of people making their way through the streets. In the bazaar, we passed jewelry and turban shops, including old and rings. Then, we found a sweet made from flour, ghee, walnuts, and sugar with a layer of cream in the middle called Daheen. It’s an invention from Najaf and you can’t find it anywhere else! They also had one without walnuts. It was really sweet! The one with walnuts was nutty and creamy, and I loved it. The buffalo cream was so good, but so sugary! Further on in the market was a man carving a large heart of a palm tree. It was so tasty and moist, and a little sweet! My second piece was a little dry and bitter, though. Then, we found a shop selling handmade Iraqi turbans. I wanted to buy a couple of different ones! I took off my shoes and entered the shop. I wanted a black one, and Tasos got a blue, red, and purple one. We sat down and the owner wrapped the turbans around our heads. He was so friendly and hospitable. I loved it! We looked like locals! Further on, we met some guys from Iran and stopped inside a jewelry shop selling prayer beads. The guys inside were so nice! We also found a fabric shop where everything is sewed by hand. Their sheep hair fabric took 2 months to make by hand and costs $500! It feels very different from the artificial version! We made it to the shrine. The entire area around it was packed! [INSERT SHRINE INFO] Toward the end of the bazaar, we stopped in a shop selling what is thought of as some of the best daheen in the city. It looked a little different from the one from earlier. It looked crumbly, crispy, and sticky. This one wasn’t creamy and didn’t have walnuts. It was also less sweet than the ones from earlier. The flavor reminded me of a less sweet version of baklava. Iranian leaders erupted with rage and threats of revenge after a U.S. drone strike killed the country’s second most powerful figure in a surprise missile attack at Baghdad’s main airport Thursday night. The death of General Qassem Soleimani, the high-profile leader of Iran’s elite Quds Force, now threatens to unleash a fresh wave of instability and conflict throughout the Middle East. Iran and Iraq fought one of the longest and bloodiest wars of the 20th century, which cost the lives of more than a million people and cemented the two countries’ rivalry in the decades that followed. But after ISIS took over wide swaths of Iraq, Iran came to Iraq's aid. After the defeat of ISIS, VICE correspondent Isobel Yeung travels to Iraq to see how Iran is exerting its growing influence over the war-torn country ahead of parliamentary elections. 🇮🇶 BIL WEEKEND: 🤍 | 🤍 🧳 TASOS: 🤍 🌎 VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG: 🤍 After over two decades of traveling the world, I’ve finally made it to my 92nd country, Iraq! Come with me as I kick off my time in this largely misunderstood country with an exciting Iraqi breakfast food tour of Baghdad, Iraq! I’d be joined by my guide Jafar from Bil Weekend, as well as my friend and fellow traveler Tasos. I couldn’t wait to eat some kahi (a phyllo dough pastry topped with a sugar syrup and a thick water buffalo cream called geymar). 📝SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER: 🤍 🌳 MY LINKTREE: 🤍 We’d be eating it at one of Baghdad’s most famous shops. The kahi was super hot, and the cream was really rich and thick. I loved the layers in it. It reminded me of a sweet and sticky paratha. It was nice and fresh, and crispy and crunchy, too! It was like a diabetic’s worst nightmare, but so tasty and filling! It’s often eaten during Eid, and usually isn’t eaten every day. They also brought us some piping hot Iraqi tea. It had a layer of sugar on the bottom. Then, we headed inside to see how they make these dishes! They use a stone oven to make bread and bake the kahi on large, circular pans before they douse them in sugar syrup. We quickly saw the Freedom Monument (Nasb-al-Hurriyah) in Tahrir Square in the center of Baghdad. It was built from 1058-1961 and symbolizes the Iraqi peoples’ strife against tyranny while paying homage to the country’s rich art history. Next, we headed to Al Rasheed Street, a famous street in downtown Baghdad, and then drove to a copper bazaar. We passed a lot of small cafes and street food stands along the way, as well as a beautiful mosque. Next to the Souq al-Saray market is Madrasa al-Mustansiriyya, a 12th-century school that taught three different subjects. In the Souq al-Saray market, we saw vendors selling scarves, street food, spices, perfumes, fruits, nuts, jewelry, games, and a chewy, flavorless natural gum. It comes from the sap of a tree! We stopped at a vendor selling aroog, or Iraqi kabab tawa. It was nice and oily and tasty! The friendly vendor also gave me some kebda, or liver sauteed with herbs. It was extremely tasty! Next door were beads used for prayers and further on, we found sweets, including Turkish delights! They had lots of different varieties, which contained nuts. They were very tasty. The sweets were too sweet, though! Next, we saw a shop selling lots of Evil Eyes and then we stopped at a shop selling some juicy and oily chicken inside sandwiches with tomatoes. Nearby was a man making falafel. He tried to give me one, but they were still boiling hot! Then, we headed to another spot selling a dish made from bread soaked in boiling fava beans, the beans themselves, tomatoes, and scrambled eggs on top. It’s called bagila bil dihin, which was an amazing, oily combination. Adding a pickled chili added a sourness and a spiciness that I loved! After that, I tried some chilies and watched some cooks make makhlama, which is scrambled eggs with lamb, tomatoes, and herbs. I loved how fresh it was! From there, we headed outside, where we found a vendor selling walnuts and a guy who offered us some water. On Al Rasheed Street, we found vendors selling dates, fish, walnuts, and vegetables. Some of the dates weren’t ripe, so they were still a bit hard! I learned that you’re never supposed to eat them in even numbers in Iraq! A vendor gave me some amazing but salty pickled ginger called torshi and then continued on to the copper market, Safafeer. Every shop here was a copper shop, but now there’s a mix. I saw lamb kebabs, liver kebabs, and more! We even saw a 100+ year old shop where everything was copper! He had antiques and new work, including lamps, plates, shoes, knick-knacks, and more! INSANE! Iraq JUST ANNOUNCED It's MASSIVE New Oil DEALS With Russia And China And SHUTS DOWN The U.S #russia #china #oil US efforts to draw the administration of Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani closer to the US appear to be failing, as Iranian influence in Iraq appears to be winning out. You see, the Iraqis want to keep communicating with countries like China, Russia, and Iran. And experts say Baghdad has already taken steps toward finalizing future deals with these nations. Recently, Al Sudani has stated his desire to strengthen Iraq's involvement in OPEC. But since production has been slashed, this is in a problematic setting. In addition, Iraq just announced its massive new oil energy deals with Russia and China, which means they're backing off from the US! If You Like This Video; Like, Share, Comment And Subscribe. This Means A Lot To Us! Thanks For Watching Our Video; INSANE! Iraq JUST ANNOUNCED It's MASSIVE New Oil DEALS With Russia And China And SHUTS DOWN The U.S Firstly, the remarkable 'oil-for-projects' deal between Iraq and China was inked in the middle of 2019. And the Iraqi Oil Minister shows no indications of altering it. Local state-backed media outlets did indicate that several seismic surveys had been initiated, this time by the Oil Exploration Company or OEC of Iraq and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation or CNOOC. This is part of the initial stages of extensive oil and gas exploration between Iraq and China in the waters off their coasts. Now, CNOOC has begun a joint research contract for two-dimensional seismic and geophysical surveys to investigate potential hydrocarbon gathers in the Iraqi offshores north of the Arabian Gulf. That's completely in line with what the Iraqi government ordered back in October. And the 2019 oil-for projects deal between Iraq and China was mandated to cover 'vital and significant projects. Roads, bridges, infrastructure, energy, oil, and electricity are "important and crucial projects." Moreover, when it comes to oil and gas exploration and production in international waters, China can do anything it wants. But Iraq is also letting Beijing increase its influence in critical onshore areas. The middle of October saw the CPECC inking an EPC contract for a two-train oil processing plant at the cost of $386 million at Quraynat. Now, the southern portion of Iraq's largest oilfield, the Rumaila field, will be developed for production. And each train will process around 120,000 barrels per day of oil from the Mishrif formation at the site. The Rumaila field is an exciting new development in the neighborhood. And it is located around 30 km north of Iraq's southern border with Kuwait. The Rumaila Operating Organization or ROO is currently in charge of the territory. It is a partnership between the British Oil Company, the Basra Energy Company, and the Iraqi State Organization for the Marketing of Oil. Additionally, the British Petroleum Corporation, the State-Owned China National Petroleum Corporation or PetroChina, and the State-Owned Mitsubishi Oil Corporation SOMO have formed a joint venture known as BECL. Now, it was initially planned for BP to increase output to 2.1 million BPD in November 2020. It originated at a rate of 1.4 million barrels per day, almost the same as it was a decade ago. It also has proven reserves of over 17 billion barrels. Thus, Rumaila is an excellent illustration of a sector in which modest investments might significantly boost crude oil output. However, in 2020, BP's national chief offered a response on the matter. He noted that talks on the next steps are now taking place between the oil ministry and Basra Oil Co. Low oil prices and the ministry's suggestion that all IOCs reduce their activity sets this year are the reasons behind this. Now, BP's original goal was to increase output by 100,000 barrels annually, reaching a total of 2.3–2.4 million BPD by 2020. And the lack of work on the Common Seawater Supply Project water-injection projection project has been the primary hurdle to attaining this output growth. Also, it's primarily due to IOC worries tied to pervasive corruption in Iraq's oil sector. Without the CSSP, Iraq will not be able to increase its oil production to what it had hoped for. This year they want to reach 6.2 million BPD, and by the end of 2023, they want to go 9 million BPD. However, the new goal is to increase oil output to 7 million BPD by 2025, making this a crucial factor. This may also provide insight into Iraq's longstanding financial obligations to foreign oil firms. More Details In The Video

A Military History of the Iraq War Part 1: "Shock and Awe"

The Iraq War is one the crucial events of early 21st century history. In many ways it defines the unipolar moment, a historical period where American global power truly stood unchallenged. The events leading up to the war, and the way in which it was justified by the Bush administration, still dominate most people's conception of the conflict. However, the fact that most popular histories of the Iraq war focus on its dubious casus belli tends to obscure what is a fascinating military campaign, one that had a pivotal role in shaping the 21st century global order. This video is a military history of the Iraq War, one that is almost completely engaged in a technical military analysis of the campaign, rather than the legality of the conflict, Weapons of Mass Destruction or the truthfulness of the Bush administration. Part 1 covers the historical and strategic background to the conflict, including a discussion of the Iraqi-American strategic relationship, the state of the American and Iraqi militaries in the 1990s, the development of critical American doctrine and technology, campaign planning and then a blow by blow account of the conventional phase of the war. Although it was followed by a disastrous civil war and insurgency, the conventional phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom was one of the most brilliant military campaigns in modern history. In just 20 days, coalition forces dismembered Baathist Iraq, capturing Baghdad and defeating an Iraqi army that outnumbered them by 5 to 1. It was a triumph of technology and doctrine, a victory that is often obscured by both the war's dubious casus belli and the bloody and painful insurgency which lasted for nearly a decade after the invasion. Despite these strategic blunders, as a piece of operational art it is an amazingly successful military campaign, and certainly one that deserves more attention from military historians. 0:00 A Military History 5:10 Desert Storm, AirLand Battle and the Second Offset Strategy 23:38 The RMA and the Reform of the US Military 31:32 The Iraqi Military in the 1990s 41:09 Neither War nor Peace 46:01 Shock and Awe: Planning for the Invasion 56:33 Saddam's Strategic Indifference 1:04:11 The Coalition Order of Battle 1:09:23 Initial Operations - Special Forces, Um Qasr and the Air Campaign 1:25:10 Nasiriyah and the Ambush of the 11th Attack Helicopter Regiment 1:42:16 The Mother of All Sandstorms and the Operational Pause 1:50:08 Technological, Doctrinal and Qualitative Dominance 2:01:46 The Karbala Gap and the Siege of Basrah 2:15:49 The Battle of Baghdad 2:28:48 Decisive Victory, Elusive Peace

Fueled by territorial, religious and political disputes between the two nations, the war was one of the world’s largest and longest conventional interstate wars and only ended in an effective stalemate eight years later.
